Sugarcane is one of the most popular and delicious crops in India. India has an amazing climate to produce sugarcane throughout the year.

India is producing 360 million tonnes of sugarcane in the year 2019. India is known about producing 75000 kg of sugarcane per hectare.

India’s 2018-19 sugar production was 33.0 million tonnes compared to 32.3 million tonnes produced in the previous year.

Output in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Karnataka accounted for a ~80% share of the country’s production.

1. Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is the highest sugarcane producing state in India by area. The Ganga river is a perennial river of Uttar Pradesh. So, there is no shortage of water in Uttar Pradesh.

In Uttar Pradesh Meerut, Bareilly, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur, and Bulandshahr are the major districts where farmers plant sugarcane.

Uttar Pradesh has the largest land of 21 lakh hectares. The annual output of sugarcane production of Uttar Pradesh is 133.3 million tonnes. Uttar Pradesh accounts for 39% of total sugarcane production in India.

Currently, Uttar Pradesh is the Largest Producer of Sugarcane in India.

Production: 1,333 Lakh Tonnes

2. Maharastra

Maharashtra is the 2nd largest producer of sugarcane in India. Maharashtra has 9 lakh hectares of cultivable sugarcane land used to produce 75.3 million tonnes of sugarcane.

In Maharastra, especially Ahmednagar, Pune, Aurangabad, Satara, and Solapur is leading sugarcane producers districts. Maharashtra has many sugar mills, that owned by different politicians.

Maharashtra has a Black Lava Soil, which is useful for growing sugarcane.

Maharasthra contributes more than 22% of total sugarcane production in the country.

Production: 753 Lakh Tonnes

3. Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu does not have many rivers. Tamil Nadu has to depend on the Cauvery River that flows through Karnataka.

Tamil Nadu does not get much rainfall either from the North-East Monsoon winds. Many parts of South Tamil Nadu have black alluvial soil, perfect for sugarcane plantation.

Tamil Nadu is the 3rd largest producer of sugarcane in India. Tamil Nadu has 2.3 lakh hectares of cultivable sugarcane land used to produce 37.5 million tonnes of sugarcane.

Production: 375 Lakh Tonnes

4. Karnataka

Karnataka is the 4th largest producer of sugarcane in India. Karnataka has 4 lakh hectares of cultivable sugarcane land used to produce 34.6 million tonnes of sugarcane.

Karnataka has two rivers, that is the Krishna and Cauvery flowing through the state. The water of the river is useful for the plantation of sugarcane. Karnataka is the largest sugar producing state in India.

Belgaum, Chitradurga, Mysore, and Shimoga are the major sugarcane producing districts of the Karnataka. Karnataka contributes 11% in total sugarcane production of the country.

Production: 346 Lakh Tonnes

5. Andhra Pradesh

Andhra Pradesh is the 5th largest producer of sugarcane in India. Andhra Pradesh is used to produce 14.9 million tonnes of sugarcane.

Karnataka has two rivers, that is the Krishna and Godavari flowing through the state. The water of the river is useful for the plantation of sugarcane.

Andhra Pradesh has black alluvial soil. The climate and soil of Andhra are perfect for sugarcane production.

Production: 149 Lakh Tonnes

6. Bihar

Bihar is the 6th largest producer of sugarcane in India. Bihar has 2.6 lakh hectares of cultivable sugarcane land used to produce 12.2 million tonnes of sugarcane.

Bihar has one river, that is the Kosi flowing through the state. The water of the river is useful for the plantation of sugarcane.

Patna, Darbhanga, Gaya, and Champaran are the major sugarcane producing districts of the Bihar. Bihar contributes 11% in total sugarcane production of the country.

Bihar’s land is extremely fertile. Bihar has a large no of sugarcane and jaggery factories all over the state.

Production: 122 Lakh Tonnes

7. Gujarat

Gujarat is an industrial state. Despite that, Gujarat is the 7th largest producer of sugarcane in India. Gujarat has 1.8 lakh hectares of cultivable sugarcane land used to produce 9.5 million tonnes of sugarcane.

The southern districts of Gujarat such as Valsad, Navsari, Surat, Bharuch, etc. and the Western districts of Bhavnagar and Junagadh are the major sugarcane producing districts of Gujarat. Gujarat contributes 3% in total sugarcane production of the country.

Production: 95.3 Lakh Tonnes

8. Haryana

Haryana is the 8th largest producer of sugarcane in India. Haryana has 1.3 lakh hectares of cultivable sugarcane land used to produce 9.3 million tonnes of sugarcane.

Faridabad, Gurgaon, Karnal, Sonepat, and Rohtak, all bordering Uttar Pradesh, are the major sugarcane producing districts of the Haryana.

Production: 93.4 Lakh Tonnes

9. Punjab

Punjab is the 9th largest producer of sugarcane in India. Punjab has 90,000 hectares of cultivable sugarcane land used to produce 6.6 million tonnes of sugarcane.

Punjab has five rivers, has some of the most fertile lands in the country. With many rivers like Sutlej flowing through Punjab, there is no shortage of water for this water-guzzling plant of sugarcane.

The water of the river is useful for the plantation of sugarcane. Punjab is known for the production of wheat, mustard and sugarcane.

Jalandhar, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, and Patiala are the major sugarcane producing districts of Punjab.

Production: 66 Lakh Tonnes

10. Uttrakhand

Uttarakhand was part of Uttar Pradesh. Uttarakhand is the 10th largest producer of sugarcane in India. Uttarakhand has 1.2 lakh hectares of cultivable sugarcane land used to produce 6.4 million tonnes of sugarcane.

Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar are the major sugarcane producing districts of the Uttarakhand.

The hilly area and suitable climate are favourable for sugarcane production.

Production: 64.32 Lakh Tonnes
